The "Saw" is a horror movie of its own class. Produced by twisted pictures, every "Saw" movie starts with a number of letters trapped by a barbed wire. This is followed by a spike which ends up with the spike being tightened hence wrecking the letters form. What follows in the movie is traps set by a master mind, each difficult in its own way. Surprisingly, the traps are made of everyday tools modified to fit their handlers' agenda. Different types of death scenes not only creep someone out, but it also makes one realize how realistic it is. Out there, there are people just happy to kidnap and inflict different types of horrors regardless of morality. The movie points out different aspects of human life and what one would do to survive or for those they deem to love.
The franchise is full of twist and turns your head will ache. As it has been argued, fans of this horror series are more interested in the complexity of the script than the actual acts carried out by the characters. Apparently, it is hard to start from the second or third movie and hope to understand the whole storyline. There have been cases of individuals who watched the movie more than six times and still they could not connect the dots between the first movie to the last one and even the upcoming set to be released this year. The irony of the movie is the traps are set in different past movies but they are revealed in later movies detailing how they were done and what should have been done. For example, saw III and IV in a flashback show the traps set in saw I.
Can the Saw franchise recapture Jigsaw’s glory, even with John Kramer now long since deceased?
Furthermore, events are left in suspense. The audience is left to speculate what could be the next thing to happen. For example, saw III has a character reading a letter, the identity of the author is hidden till "Saw IV" and then the contents of the letter are hidden till "Saw V". Mind you, this is not done via flashback alone, the characters that are deceased are reanimated to explain the different scenarios that could play out whether in their favor or not. Even after the death of Jigsaw, the main protagonist, the traps, and protégé he left behind still carry on his work, talk about a legacy built. The twists and gruesome deaths keep piling up yet you cannot fail to recognize the genius behind the idea.
"Saw" one begins with two men locked in a bathroom. One of the men is a doctor who diagnosed Jigsaw with a brain tumor suspected to be cheating on his wife while the other is the reporter who unveiled the cheating. The rules are simple, the doctor kills the reporter or his family dies. In all the movies, the odds are stacked against the parties caught. The question that pops up every now and then is what would someone do to survive? How far are they willing to go for those they love and what of hypocrisy in friendship or relationships. One of the movies begins with a young woman hanging on the ceiling while below are her two boyfriends. The allegation is that she is cheating on both and the choice is only one survives. In such a situation, clouded with anger, fatigue and fear, the choices made are questionable on morality grounds.
No casting has been announced, and it isn't known if Tobin Bell will be back to reprise his iconic role as Jigsaw.
The question is why watch the movies at all, is it because individuals crave for a taste of darkness to just see what they are capable of on their own? Understanding the motive for watching this movie and the complexity is a puzzle. Arguments had been put forward for its release on the grounds that it was corrupting society. However, business is business, and the stakeholders have to be paid. Furthermore, sequels only come out due to public opinion hence if the public like the movies, why should it not go on being shown. Funny thing, Jigsaw unlike Amanda gave the victims a choice, a way out. Armanda, on the other hand, ensured the traps were foul proof hence one of the reasons Jigsaw took her out.
The message that has been preached throughout the movie is the appreciation of what you as an individual have. The story of Jigsaw is that of one diagnosed with an inoperable tumor, lost an unborn baby and countless failed suicide attempts. This is enough to make anyone appreciate life and he seemingly uses this ideology to try and make the victims understand. Surprisingly, unlike other psychos in other movies doing this either for revenge or pleasure, Jigsaw carries this as an obligation to society. Though this can be debatable in the first movie as he hires a detective to follow the doctor to confirm if he was cheating; seemingly looking for dirt on the doctor. The other movies are all about giving thanks for the life and people one has in his or her life.
“Bodies are turning up, and they’re linked to Jigsaw — or a Jigsaw copycat,” says Peter Spierig.
The buzz has been going on and on and finally, the trailer has already been released. The first scene is of a young woman jogging under a bridge only to meet bewildered people looking up. She turns to see a body hanging as she screams. The scene then turns us to a police station where a coroner is examining a body with a flash drive in it. When played on a laptop, the icy voice saying “the truth shall set you free” then a timer signifying death or beginning of an ordeal that would definitely end in death. The next scene is of five people chained in a room and being pulled towards a grinding machine. The typical traps that have been there from the first movie are seen as a SWAT team infiltrates several buildings.
Through out the trailer, one sees different sentences implying the return of original Jigsaw, furthermore, the traps and tools used in the first movie are also visible hence speculation on what his role will be in the new movie. Considering this is the final movie, one wonders where the whole journey will end and will society be left safer or worse of. One thing for sure is that Jigsaw will be defeated; his path was already set from the beginning though considering the idea of suspense was borrowed from "Lost" the series, the directors could pull up something unnerving. If you are light hearted, the advice has a doctor stand by if you must watch the whole franchise and for horror fans, the wait and over thinking on what will happen should already have started.
With so much controversy, suspense and drama, the "Saw" Franchise not only captures one’s attention but also ensures the creativity in the master piece is passed on.
