San Diego’s Comic Con rained hype-worthy trailers." Justice League", "Ready Player One", "Stranger Things"," Westworld", and of course, the much-anticipated trailer for "The Walking Dead’s" upcoming season 8.
Season 7 was on the slow side—it presented a world that was more or less static. Still, there are some situations that are unresolved, and we’re looking toward season 8 to address them. And we’ve had very little to go on since the end of last season, due in part a lot of cancellations at SDCC.
Those cancellations are understandable, consider the unfortunate accident that led to the death of John Bernecker (stuntman) on the set of the show. But the lack of info has made us desperate for more—so let’s pick apart the season 8 trailer, right?
Except… in true “The Walking Dead” fashion, the trailer is much more tease-y than informative. We’re left scratching our heads by these four curious mysteries…
The eighth season of The Walking Dead, an American post-apocalyptic horror television series on AMC, is scheduled to premiere on October 22, 2017and consist of 16 episodes.
Maggie’s Baby Bump?
We know that Maggie is carrying Glenn’s baby, and we don’t know quite yet how much time has passed when we see her in the season 8 trailer. But we did expect to see at least some sign of that bun in the oven, right? We can’t imagine Maggie losing the baby, but then again, we’ve learned to temper our expectations when it comes to the tragedy in this show.
What’s Up With the Gun Barrel Tally?
We see Daryl holding (finding?) a gun in the trailer. And like another gun in the show, it has something etched onto it. Except this time, it’s not a word or a name. The gun Daryl seems to be examining so closely is etched with tally marks (we count 42).
Now, it may not be something super relevant, but it is highlighted in the trailer. There’s sure to be a ton of speculation in regards to what’s being tallied. Deaths? Days? Kills? We’ll have to wait for season 8 to find out!
Production began on April 25, 2017, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Is That Eugene Lurking?
Our favorite traitor—or least favorite, depending on how that works—doesn’t make much of an appearance, if any in the trailer. There are a few moments where we might see him, obscured by shadows, but it’s intentionally difficult to determine if it’s really him.
Eugene’s storyline is one which might be central to season 8, so it’s very curious that he’s barely featured. Does that mean they’re purposefully keeping him under wraps, and that his story line might be a big reveal? Or is it that Eugene will remain loyal to Negan’s vision and his character development is basically kaput?
Are We Finally Getting the Time Jump?
If you haven’t been spoiled on the time jump that occurs in the comics, you’ve been living under a rock. The trailer seems to hint, with a shot of Rick Grimes waking up with a long, long beard, that the time jump is incoming. If that’s true, that might lead to the biggest surprises of the season.
If it does happen, we anticipate it happening midway through. That gives them time to wrap up a few plotlines that need resolution while saving enough time to get us into the groove of the new timeline.
After all, a lot can happen in two years… for one thing, Maggie’s sure to have finally had that baby, right?
We’ll see soon enough!
