Netflix Okays the Filming Of a Sequel to Bright

Netflix recently announced that it would back a sequel to the film "Bright". The company made this announcement through its Twitter and Facebook pages. However, many people knew about it for a long time. In fact, rumors of the sequel started before the release of the first film on December 22. That means this announcement was a confirmation of what many people already knew. It seems as though Netflix could not hide it any longer because keeping preparations for the sequel a secret is difficult if not impossible. That is why the streaming service felt that it was necessary to share leaked orc auditions during the first week of 2018.

The cast in the previous film will be returning in the sequel. In other words, Will Smith and his co-star for the movie, Joel Edgerton will feature in "Bright 2". The director of the first film, i.e., David Ayer will direct and write the sequel. Ayer limited himself to being a director in the original movie. The writer for that one was Max Landis. It will be interesting to see how excellent his writing skills are for this kind of film. It is worth noting that Ayer is one of the best in screenwriting. Did you know that he wrote "Training Day"? He also wrote and directed numerous films including "End of Watch", "Street Kings", "Sabotage" and "Harsh Times" among others.

Critics were brutal when it comes to evaluating the first film. David Ehrlich from Indiewire called it one of the worst movies he saw in 2017. Jordan Hoffman from Vanity Fair described it as a dreadful bore. Todd Gilchrist from the Wrap said that watching "Bright" made him feel like he should see "Suicide Squad" instead. Other critics were as blunt and harsh on this film as they were. "Bright" also performed poorly when it came to ratings. In fact, the film has a score of 28% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb. Those are abysmal ratings for the film. These scores are shocking when an excellent actor like Will Smith features in it.

The question is why Netflix would back a sequel to it when the critics hate it so much, and the rating for it is appalling. Well, it boils down to viewership. Netflix announced that "Bright" had the highest viewing on the streaming service for an original film that was in its first week of release. Netflix cannot ignore that remarkable record despite what the critics say. Remember, players in the film industry find it easier to produce a sequel of a highly successful original than to go for another original film. The same principle applies in this case. The cost of "Bright" was $90, and the viewership shows that this price tag was worthwhile.

The people that liked "Bright" will like "Bright 2" as well because only a few of them read what the critics say so get ready for another human and orc adventure. Perhaps the writing this time will be perfect because Ayer is handling it. Look out for it and write a review of your own.
