Why the blockbuster Magnificent Seven is a Hollywood must watch

The 'Magnificent seven' is an American Western action film that has been directed by Antoine Fuqua as a remake to the classic story the Magnificent seven which had been directed and produced by John Sturges as a remake of the 1954 Japanese language film 'Seven Samurai’. The town of Rose Creek is under a life threatening control by Bartholomew Bogue, an industrialist. The desperate townspeople employ the help and protection of seven guns men amongst them an outlaw, a bounty hunter, gambler and hired guns. As the magnificent seven prepare Rose Creek for the violence that is much anticipated, they find themselves wrapped up more into the affairs of the town fighting for more than just the money.

Cast

Joining the ensemble cast are Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Byung-hun Lee, Vincent D’onoforio, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Martin Sensmeier as the magnificent seven

The classic remake features Denzel Washington as Sam Chisolm who is a bounty hunter and leader of the seven. He is a duly sworn warrant officer from Wichita, Kansas who is after the bad guys. Sam Chisolm has been renamed from Chris Adams. Washington did not watch any western films when growing up as it was towards the end of the Western era movies. He admits that he did not watch the previous magnificent movie but has watched the original movie, Seven Samurai.

Chris Pratt takes up the role of Josh Farraday who is the gambler. Chris says that the character is a trickster and a fox. He is a drinker, gambler and womanizer. He is however a deadly guy in a fire fight. Just like for Washington, this is the Chris Pratts first Western movie and the only movie that the two have starred together.

Ethan Hawke plays the character Gooodnight Robicheaux, an ex confederate soldier. The character is much more mature and haunted as compared to the 1960 character. Hawke was the first person on board upon the finalizing of the movie.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays the character Vasque, the outlaw who is a bandit on the run and has nothing to lose. Manuel describes his character as on intoxicated with gun fighting.

The remake has however fallen short in areas where it has failed to expound on the back stories of the main characters or giving a background story on the townspeople. The film is not much deep and is most likely a crowd-pleaser. The only townsmen that the viewers will get to know is Bennet’s character who is also a warrior in her own ways.

The movie has received claims as Hollywood’s first color blind blockbuster as it features an African American- Denzel Washington as a Bounty hunter who leads the seven in a small white West town that is under the threat of extinction by rapacious businessman. In response to the claims, Antonio Fuqua claimed that they could have brought out the issue of race in the movie but the actors were very good and the no one thought about black or white throughout the production.
