A 'constructive' week for Demolition

'Demolition' is a terrific movie by French-Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée, that’s unfortunately been bounced around a bit. It opened at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2015 in anticipation of release, but was pulled back by Fox Searchlight for release much later. Last week it had a stealth premiere party as Demolition was set to go up against the mega release of 'Batman v Superman’.

This has definitely been a fruitful premiere for Demolition. Jean-Marc Vallée, of the Dallas Buyers Club fame, gave a video introduction for the movie, saying that 'If it is true that the people around you, and your friends define you, if it is true that what you do defines you, then I am happy and proud to present this film.' All seemed well, before he decided to turn around, take a sledgehammer and smash a glass panel, in an attempt to reference the movie's plot about a man who 'demolishes’ his house after the tragic death of his wife, in search of a catharsis that never comes. Well, point taken.

Considered as Jake Gyllenhaal’s best performance since 'Brokeback Mountain' as a man who refuses to mourn his wife's death, Demolition is edgy, yet subtle at the same time.

Naomi Watts is brilliant in a rare supporting role that allows her to reflect her co-star's soul and engage in effective communication without using sex in the process. A terrific cast a captivating story make for a movie that’s not just entertaining, but thought provoking as well. Featuring the most baldly manipulative first and last five minutes of any movie this year, its coldness is like a veneer that settles over the protagonist, running through the heart of the movie. Of course, it’s when you’re not trying that everything happens, and the same can be said for Jake’s stellar performance in the movie. So watch, this will be the time he does manage to pull a nomination. Starting to feel overdue, if you ask me.

Kicking off the week with some gratuitous tomfoolery, Jake Gyllenhaal stopped by 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ on March 21, to promote the movie, and ended up performing a 'disgustingly’ hilarious policeman skit with plenty of snacking, followed by spitting back and forth with Fallon.

The next day, while Jake looked his dapper self in a fitted black suit, Demolition’s lead female actress, Naomi Watts turned heads at the film’s Special Screening at the SVA Theatre in New York this Monday, with a delicate tiered seafood green dress. The Screening was hosted by Fox Searchlight Pictures with the Cinema Society. The 47 year-old British beauty nailed feminine vintage in the classic Valentino Fall 2016 gown with a waterfall of sheer frills and cascading ruffles adding a delicate touch to the look which was highlighted with a black trim. She wore her blonde hair in gentle waves and accessorised with a studded black clutch and blackened white gold and diamond jewellery by Solange Azagury-Partridge, giving her a modern touch. Accentuated with red lipstick and just a hint of makeup, she looked effortlessly chic and naturally classy, evoking '40s and '50s muses like Hepburn and Bacall. Its only the first month of Spring, but looks like we’ve already found our seasonal trend. This year, its all about the ruffles!
