The competitors for the Oscars’ biggest prize were Mad Max: Fury Road, The Big Short, Brooklyn, Bridge of Spies, The Martian, The Revenant and Room. The Tom McCarthy-directed drama is about a Boston Prize-winning team that investigates and exposes wild sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests. This made it the only film to win the Best Original Screenplay category with only one other award. As the night progressed the journalism drama made history by beating The Revenant and Mad Max to become the first film to win the coveted Best Picture award. Receiving the award, Tom McCarthy said, “Too many women and men are victims of sexual abuse. Even young scholars in colleges and campuses are still victims of sexual abuse.” He asked everyone to pledge that they will change the culture, so that no man or woman will ever feel sexually abused. In total, Spotlight was nominated for six awards: Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best supporting Actor, and Best Editing. Loser’s reactions After “The Revenant” won three, including best actor, best director and best cinematography, everyone expected it to win the coveted Best Picture award. But when it came to announce the Best Picture … everyone was surprised. Spotlight was named The Best picture for The Academy Award. The Revenant cast and critics feel that The Revenant should have won the coveted award. Many opined, “The Revenant” and “Mad Max: Fury Road “which dominated the night by featuring the best actor and director split the vote. Giving the smart but modest, “Spotlight” the opportunity to win. Critics say” Spotlight” was not the best film of the year. It was good. But it is not the type to win the grand cinema award of The Best Picture. Many argued that it is almost impossible for a film that won only two Oscars to win Best Picture. Spotlight was the biggest winner at The 88th Academy Awards: How will this affect its box office?  The film already out on DVD/VOD, and it has made $31.9 million, in its 17th week.
