San Andreas to rock the world again

After the 2015 blockbuster hit, San Andreas, it seems that we’re in for a rocky sequel. Even though it received mixed critics, with a 42/100 score on Metacritic, it proved to be more than lucrative for its makers, amassing $470 million at the box office, thus largely compensating for the $110 budget.

We all surely remember Raymond Gaines (Dwayne 'the Rock’ Johnson) and his grapefruit-sized biceps as he is flying around in his helicopter, often changing routes and trying to rescue everyone who seems to be in distress. Mind you, he is an LA-based rescue pilot, so he does a lot of flying. As he is in the middle of a divorce from his wife Emma (Carla Gugino), he is doing his best to keep the bond with his student daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario), with whom he is planning a trip to San Francisco.

Now, this is where the seismology makes its way. The San Andreas Fault, first identified in the nineteenth century, causes the ground to move and the landscape to transform. It’s been a cause of several earthquakes in the past, and now it strikes again. At this point it’s wreaking havoc in Los Angeles, where Emma is having a lunch. Loyalty diverts Ray from a current rescue mission, and he flies to her rescue, the two of them only just fleeing the crumbling building.

Now that that’s taken care of, it is time to rescue their offspring, Blake, who is already in San Francisco. (Is it only me or this totally recalls Liam Neeson in Taken, travelling half the world for his baby girl? However, this significantly shorter journey makes up for the mileage by all kinds of disasters Ray and Emma have to go through, including the tearing ground, the consequence of the fault. )

Several means of transportation later, the two arrive in San Francisco as the fault brings about a tsunami, destroying the ever-standing Golden Gate Bridge. As everything goes underwater, the daughter is retrieved and Ray’s wife has her share of superheroism in an epic scene breaking into the building with a boat where she rescues several people.

Oh, we should not forget Sia’s amazing cover of 'California Dreamin’.

In case you haven't seen the movie, check out the official trailer and be prepared for the upcoming sequel.

As for the sequel, the action will reportedly focus on the aptly named Ring of Fire, a strip of faults and volcanoes surrounding the Pacific Ocean. According to statistics, 90% of the world’s earthquakes originate here. It is left to see how the audacious Raymond Gains will fit into the story. And the story is this time in the hands of a gifted duo of writers, Neil Widener and Gavin James, already noted for Verona, their vision of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The production is once again left to Beau Flynn, after the first part. When it comes to cast, we will see the known faces of Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino and Alexandra Daddario once again. The rest of the facts are mostly under the veil of mystery, including the time of the release. However, we are not likely to expect the sequel very soon, at least according to a number of projects awaiting Johnson this year.
