From The Godfather to a Dirty Grandpa

Dirty Grandpa is an extremely vulgar road trip comedy about a young grandson and grandpa who head to Florida and Grandpa is ready to get back in the game since the passing of his wife. Here's how the movie plays out: Zac Efron is getting married to an overbearing girl. He goes to his Grandmother’s funeral and finds his Grandfather. He gets dragged into going to Daytona Beach with Grandfather. Zac Efron and his grandfather then go and party wild at Spring Break. Gramps tells Efron that his fiancé is not good enough for him. Efron then starts having feelings for another girl he meets at Daytona. He and Gramps get into an argument which ends up in them leaving each other. They then reconcile their differences afterwards. Later on, they go home and Efron breaks up with fiance and ends up with the other girl he met on the trip making his grandfather a very happy man. The World is saved. The end. Really, Bobby? You go from Taxi Driver and Godfather to another teen sex comedy.

Though this movie might have all the markings of a really crappy movie but we cannot argue that Robert De Niro has been in some of the greatest movies of all time and that is why the movies performed so well in the box office and opened with strong numbers. As for heartthrob Zac Efron, he’s hilarious when he’s trying to be the unfunny and serious guy that comedians use to be funny in comedies. All in all, Dirty Grandpa looked like it was going to be that tired set-up of an old guy acting like a pervert, being crass and hence that’s funny. But somehow, Dirty Grandpa is not just another pervy comedy. It’s kind of a great comedy. The plot includes that eye rolling third act turn for the pretentious where the whole thing turns into being about being honest to yourself or some horseshit. But a lot of the jokes hit their marks and hit them hard. I laughed much more in this than I have in any comedy for quite some time, with a lot of thanks to Dan Mazer’s hilariously creative script. On top of the jokes, there’s so much to like in Dirty Grandpa. There’s a short cameo by Danny Glover, followed by an interesting introduction involving TV show Alf. Another thing to mention is the Starship Troopers quote, the Terminator reference and of course an outstanding Andre the Giant anecdote.

The movie features homophobia and casual racism and played for laughs, but it’s later amended in a weird way, ending with Robert saying the N-word(!). Given, though, all the time the movie takes to clear over that stuff, however, it is incredibly sexist throughout. Its juvenile schoolboy humor and relentlessly low-brow make one feel somewhat guilty for liking it as much. All in all, it does what it does bloody great and the public reception for the film was high. Many people bought the tickets for this movie to go on to see their favorite actors on the big screen.
