"The Dark Tower" is based on Stephen King’s novel which is a continuation of a series of novels that he has written. It is a western American science fantasy action horror movie. It is directed and co-written by Arcel. It is produced by Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman and Erica Huggins. The movie features Idris Elba who is the lead actor as Roland Deschain , he is a gunslinger on a mission to protect the fabled building known as the Dark Tower that backs all realities. Mathew McCaughey plays Walter o'Dim, who is Roland Deschain’s nemesis. The producers intend to launch a television and film franchise as the first episodes mix elements from a number of books in the eight part series. The movie takes place in New York and Roland's Old West which is a parallel universe. The movie is slated for release by Columbia Pictures on the 4th of August 2017. It will be shown in 2D and 3D.

Roland Deschain, who is a lone gunslinger, travels through an Old West-like landscape where "the world seems to have moved on in search of Walter o'Dim. Roland Deschain travels with a young teenager who believes his stories to be true. He is also looking for the mythical Dark Tower. He hopes that when he finds it, he will be able to save his world that is dying.

Stephen King sold the rights to "The Dark Tower" for an estimated nineteen million dollars in 2007. He sold these rights to J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof. This project has been in the works since 2007. It involved periodic reports and official announcements. The proposed film adaptation has undergone three major phases to date. They include the initial planning with Abrams from 2007 to 2009, then in 2010 to 2015 with Ron Howard and currently with Arcel. On April 10, 2015, it was reported that MRC and Sony Pictures would fast track the production with a completely new script by Jeff Pinker and Goldsman. Though Howard was out as director, he still holds the role of producer. The movie production was funded by Sony and MRC.

The Cast
The cast in the movie include Roland Deschain played by Idris Elba , Mathew McCaughey as Walter Padick, Jackie Haley as Sayre, Tom Taylor plays the part of Chambers, Katheryn Winnick plays Laurie Chambers, Pimli is played by Fran Kranz , Tirana played by Abbey Kershaw, the part of Timmy is played by Barbieri, the role of Ara is taken on by Claudia Kim, José Zúñiga plays the doctor, the role of Susan Delgado is played by Alex McGregor , Hamilton plays Lucas Hanson, the role of Steven Deschain is taken on perfectly by Dennis Haysbert and De-Wet Nagel plays Taheen Tech.

On 2nd June 2015, it was confirmed that Sony was considering giving Nickolaj Arcel the role of director in the film. Variety reported on August 5th, 2015 that the role of "Man in Black" had been given to Mathew McConaughey and on 8th January 2016 it was confirmed that Idris Elba had been given the lead role of Roland Deschain. In February of the same year, it was announced that Abbey Lee had been given the female lead role of Tirana. Variety broke the news that the young actor Tom Taylor had been cast as Jake Chambers. The filming began in April 2016 in South Africa. Some of the scenes were shot in New York.

Release
Though the film had been slated for release in February 2017, the release date was pushed back to 4th of August 2017 switching places with the Emoji Movie that was produced by Sony Pictures. On October 2016, an unfinished trailer was leaked but it was later pulled down on all sites on the internet. Promotional websites have been created to promote the movie. A full-length trailer for the film was released on May 3rd, 2017.

Entertainment Weekly reported in September 2016 once the film was released, a TV series set within the same context and continuity would be released in 2018. Elba and Taylor would both keep their roles as Roland and Jake respectively. It was reported that the series would potentially fill in the gaps that were left out in the film.

It was important for the director Mr. Nikolaj Arcel not to make the movie a direct adaptation of the novel as it is the first from the series. In his first movie, he wanted to introduce the viewers to the characters and the world and what they are all about. His aim is that as more sequels are produced, then they can remain more true to the actual stories in the novel.

Though "the Dark Tower" has some of the most loyal and passionate fans, they are divided on the set books from the series they prefer. Some fans like the first novels in the series while others prefer the latter. Some of the fans hate the fact that Stephen King included himself into the story as an actual character while others love it. King told Arcel never to include him as an actual character in the film.

One of the things that Arcel changed in the film is the ending. While he still remains true to the fact of the film revolving around Roland, Walter, Jake, Oy and Susannah, he couldn’t have Rolland chase after the main character the entire movie and have them sit down for just a chat by a camp fire. In the movie, he spices things up by ensuring they have it out in the end which makes it more interesting.

Conclusion
During an interview, Arcel said that he would never want to do a film that left people on a cliff-hanger. He said that as the first film in a franchise or any saga that was to be produced, it needed to be able to stand alone as you never know what could happen. He also said that when making a movie, you also needed to give people some level of satisfaction and though you want to raise their curiosity, he said it was important to give some sort of conclusion. As director of the film, that is the work he put into developing the script.
