'La La Land' scoops six wins

Going into the Oscars, 'La La Land' was on everyone's lips. Many placed their bet on 'La La Land' winning majority of its 13 nomination categories. Of these, movie critics and fans alike were pretty sure that the recently released film would walk away with the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress awards. Well, their predictions almost came true, 'Moonlight', however, beat 'La La Land' to the Best Picture win.

'La La Land' garnered 6 Oscar statuettes last night. Emma Stone and Damien Chazelle contributed to these 6 wins by coming top in the Best Actress and Best Director categories respectively. Stone had been expected to face strong competition from 'Elle's' Elizabeth Huppert and Natalie Portman for her epic delivery in the sensational film, 'Jackie'. She, however, did many to ward them off and increase 'La La Land's' 2017 Oscars tally.

On Damien Chazelle's part, his win was never a surprise. Many knew before that his directorial work for one of the most talked-about musicals of all times would certainly bring home a win. It was however quite unfortunate for him that his film did not scoop the Best Picture win too. The Best Director and Best Picture wins have for long been tied together in the History of Oscars.

The other categories in which 'La La Land' won include Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design. It's easy to tell why the popular film took the two song awards, it boasts of sensational music from leading artists such as Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and Justin Hurwitz among others. The cinematography award also certainly did belong to 'La La Land' judging from its great looking and well-coordinated scenes.

'La La Land' is a musical about a young couple who are trying to make it in Hollywood as an actress and jazz artist respectively. The couple is played by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Unlike Emma who emerged top in her category, her co-star Gosling failed to make it in the Best Actor category where he had been nominated. This award instead went to Casey Affleck.

A moonlit night for 'Moonlight'

Barry Jenkins' 'Moonlight' also fared well at the Oscars Ceremony 2017. It won in three major categories among the 8 categories under which it had been nominated. Moonlight's wins included Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was indeed a surprise that it finished ahead of 'La La Land in the Best Picture category as the latter was the frontrunner going into the ceremony. It's, however, a well-deserved win for the film, which chronicles the story of a young man trying to discover himself, is an epic work.

'Moonlight's' Mahershala Ali beat top contender Dev Patel of 'Lion' to win in the Best Supporting Actor category. The latter had been tipped to win by a section of pundits and fans. 'Manchester by the Sea's' Lucas Hedges had also been a favorite to win in this particular category.

'Moonlight's' other nominations had included Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director. For the Best Director award, renown director Barry Jenkins was facing fierce rivalry from his counterparts Damien Chazelle of 'La La Land' and Kenneth Lonergan of 'Manchester by the Sea'. Chazelle eventually won.

No win for Denzel Washington

Prior to the Oscars, one film star whom many batted would with no doubt win his category was renown actor Denzel Washington. Washington had been nominated in the Best Actor category, a section which also included 'Manchester by the Sea's' Casey Affleck, 'Hacksaw Ridge's' Andrew Garfield, 'La La Land's' Ryan Gosling, and 'Captain Fantastic's' Viggo Mortensen. This top category's win however eventually went to Casey Affleck.

This man goes back to his homeland to take care his new responsibility only to be confronted by a tragic past.

Viola finally wins an Oscar

After previously failing to win an Oscar with Doubt, actress Viola Davis made a comeback last night to walk away with the statuette for Best Supporting Actress. Davis has been one of the top film stars who has for long endured an Oscarless career in spite of their onscreen talent and hard work. Her win last night thus breaks this cycle as far as her film career is concerned. Viola beat top contenders for the award such as 'Manchester by the Sea's' Michelle Williams and 'Moonlight's' Naomi Harris.

'People ask me all the time what kind of stories do you want to tell Viola and I say, 'Exhume those bodies. Exhume those stories; the stories of the people who dream big and never saw those dreams to fruition, people who fell in love and lost'

Wins for Disney

As had been expected, Disney didn't walk away empty-handed from last night's celebrations. The leading film and media house clinched statuettes for its films 'Zootopia' and 'The Jungle Book'. 'Zootopia' won in the Best Animated Feature category whereas 'The Jungle Book' was victorious in the Best Visual Effects category.

In regards to the Best Animated Feature category, some had been of the opinion that Disney could lose to Laika's 'Kubo' and the 'Two Strings'. This was because Disney also other another film, 'Moana', in the same category. It was felt that Disney could split its vote between the two films leading to a win for a different nominee.

'Zootopia' is an anti-discrimination story about a young rabbit cop and a con artist red fox. 'The Jungle Book', on the other hand, is a story of an orphaned boy who is guided on a journey to self-discovery by animals.

Fashion and glam

Like any other event, the Oscars Ceremony 2017 was not lacking in fashion and glam. The ladies, as usual, brought glam to the red carpet with attires which will most likely be remembered long after discussions about the 2017 Oscars have quietened. It's not easy narrowing this list down but the three best looks of the night go to Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, and Taraji P. Henson.

Hailee Steinfeld looked bedazzling in a floral embellished Ralph & Russo gown whereas Davis looked magically stunning in a red Armani Prive dress. Davis accessorized her dress with a metallic clutch and a gold bracelet. She certainly did look great, a look that was perfect for a red carpet event and a winner at such an event. On Henson's part, she wore a black off-the-shoulder by Alberta Ferretti. This was accentuated with a beautiful diamond necklace which added, even more, sheen to her terrific look.

Other ladies who also looked glamorous last night include Brie Larson, Ruth Negga, Emma Stone, Jessica Biel, Kirsten Dunst, Octavia Spencer, Dakota. Johnson, and Isabelle Huppert among others.

In regards to men's looks, most of the gentlemen chose to wear tuxedos. Some of the most notably dressed gentlemen of the night included Jamie Dornan, Pharrell Williams, Jamie Garfield, and Ryan Gosling among others. Not to forget, there was also little Sunny Pawar in a black tuxedo and sneakers.

Political activism

Actress Ruth Negga on her part, for example, had a blue ribbon pinned to her sultry Valentino gown. In another case, Emma Stone and Dakota Johnson wore gold badges to show their support for Planned Parenthood.

A mix up of names

In an event reminiscent of the infamous Miss Universe pageant where TV star Steve Harvey mixed up the names of crown winners, the 2017 Oscars also had the names of winners mixed up in an important category. This was none other than the Best Picture category which was won by 'Moonlight'.

Award presenters Warren Beaty and his co-star Faye Dunaway first announced the category winner as 'La La Land'. It was only after two of the musical's producers had given their acceptance speech that the mistake was detected and the winner announced as 'Moonlight' and not 'La La Land' as had earlier been read out. It turned out that Warren had been handed the wrong envelope which he, in turn, passed to Faye Dunaway. Inside the envelope was a card written 'Emma Stone, La La Land'. This had made Beaty feel reluctant at first but they still went ahead and read out the winner's name.

The U.S. media outlet also observed singer and 'La La Land' star John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen engaging in an intimate conversation while a security guard tried all that time to keep persons passing by from stepping on Teigen's elegant dress. John Legend after sometimes turned to greet a 'La La Land' costar.
