It will soon be three years since fans said goodbye to the series 'How I Met Your Mother'. After 9 seasons with average viewing figures of more than 8 million per episode, 2 Golden Globe and 28 Grammy award nominations, it seemed that the exploits of Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) and their other zany friends were getting a little stale. Reviews were not so favorable over the latter 2 seasons and the flashbacks from 2030 to the current day Manhattan dating scene narrative just wasn’t so funny.
Before being picked up for another season, the writers planned for Victoria to be the mother. The show would end with the shot of her at Claudia and Stuart's wedding followed by Ted saying, 'and that's how I met your mother'
The network that aired HIMYM, CBS, did order a pilot for a spin-off series called 'How I Met Your Dad' in 2014. It was to star Greta Gerwig in the lead role as Ted Mosby’s wife. As before the intention was for her to recount to her children, in flashback, about the events leading up to her meeting their dad. The pilot was not well received and the show did not make it to full series production much to the surprise of critics, and disappointment of viewers.
Flash forward to the present day and fans who still yearn for the show might soon be getting a pleasant surprise. Some critics were left confused over the last episode, which aired in March 2014, and was somewhat open ended. It certainly left some room for a future return and apparently that is now probable. Do not expect it go right back to where we left off though because the spin-off which is planned will not follow the same plot framework.

The new show called 'How I Met Your Father' is intended to have a completely new set of characters and cast. Deadline, who first reported this story, described it as a 'brand new take on the premise with new characters and new writers'. This would allow 20th TV, who are making the pilot, to sell and air their product on a network other than CBS, but no plans for that have been announced as yet. The spin-off will use the basic premise of a mother looking back as she explains to her children just how she came to meet, date and finally marry their father.
So who is behind this new show? None other than the 2 highly talented co-executive producers of the NBC show 'This Is Us', Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker. The series which is receiving great reviews is shown on NBC and began a full 18 episode season 1 in September this year. Elizabeth and Isaac are 'under an overall deal' with 20th TV to write and produce the pilot project. So when can we look forward to seeing this much-wanted spin-off? Unfortunately, we do not yet know. The script is still being written and there is no word from the executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, who were the creators of 'How I Met Your Mother', about when production might start.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, 'This Is Us' writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are working on the new spin-off titled 'How I Met Your Dad'
Fans of the original series will have to wait before judging if 'How I Met Your Father' measures up, but we can be sure that if it is anywhere near as good that it will compulsory viewing.
