The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made “The Lego Movie” a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble—Lego Batman—stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

What happens when you take two fond childhood memories and mix them together for the children of today? In the newest addition to the series of LEGO movies coming out you’ll find classic comic book vigilante Bruce Wayne (Batman) fighting bad guys once again in his home, Gotham City, right beside his trusty team of sidekicks- Batgirl, Robin, and Alfred. In this tale of bad versus good, we see that Joker is planning the (typical and) ultimate Gotham City takeover and must immediately be stopped- can Batman handle an entire squad of villains on his own? There are always challenges to face when you’re looking to conquer evil. In this newest 'Batman film', there’s a plot twist. It's time that Batman will finally have to face his flaws and learn to work together in order to beat the enemies? In a LEGO world, what more could you expect but the lesson of learning teamwork?

Cast and Crew

The movie extends off of the original LEGO movie using characters that we all know and love. This movie is stocked with all your comic book favorites. They even managed to include a DC favorite Superman, voiced by Channing Tatum, has weaseled his way into this Batman flick. With Will Arnett as the voice of Batman, you already know that the inner turmoil Batman faces is going to be great and he’s geared up with sidekick Robin, voiced by Michael Cera, a team that worked so well in Arrested Development. Rosario Dawson takes on Batgirl with her usual girl-power goodness. This isn’t the first time Rosario Dawson is voicing a superhero. She also voiced Wonder Woman in the animated movie 'Justice League: Throne of Atlantis' that came out in 2009. She was perfectly suited for the part and her spunk always manages to instill that superhero glimmer.

On the opposite end, the villain team also consists of movie favorites- Joker is voiced by Zach Galifianakis and is joined by Jenny Slate as Harley Quinn, Jason Mantzoukas as Scarecrow, Conan O'Brien as the Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Doug Benson as Bane just to name a few. They also snuck in Tom Green as King Kong and Eddie Lizard as Voldemort which was a very exciting and definitely unexpected twist. Although only cameos Seth Green and Conan O’Brien are those quick witted funny additions that just tie a movie together and keep you laughing in the darkest of times. It’s almost insane that they’ve managed to base a dark classic on plastic figures and keep the story rolling.

If you can’t make it dark than at least let that satire shine through. The script is great with constant references to the entire Batman world from the older TV shows to the comic books and even Christopher Nolan’s 'Dark Knight' movie trilogy. If you’re an all around Batman fan and whether you have kids or not this movie might make the perfect choice for your next adventure to the cinema.

Production Information

This movie was produced in collaboration with production companies that include: Warner Bros, Lego Systems A/S, Lin Pictures, Lord Miller and Vertigo Entertainment. The producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are actually the same guys from the original LEGO movie. The movie cost $80 million to make and while that number may seem high for an everyday person it’s pretty low considering that Pixar movies on average spend around $200 million to get made and produced. It’s your classic, 3D digital animation that you see everywhere now directed by Chris McKay. The movie went into production in the USA and was released February 9th, 2017. If you’ve already seen 'The Lego Movie' or any of the trailers you know exactly what to expect from this animated style that kids love. It’s visually astounding and everything you would expect from such reputable and high-end franchises. It’s even better to see it in IMAX. Just make sure that you return your glasses after the film.

Latest News / Gossip

Looking for some fun facts on the preparation for the movie? Get ready to wince. To prepare for the release of the movie and to get people talking Will Arnett appeared on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' where he walked across a pile of Legos. If you’re reading this review you’re most likely well versed in Lego- and the pain of stepping on them. One of the most unexpectedly pleasant aspects of this movie is the soundtrack. Batman has his very own theme song and even though we wish it was Will Arnett singing it we still love the fact that Patrick Stump, from Fall Out Boy, has taken on the task of being a rock star animated Batman. We are however very pleased that Will Arnett does a brief rapping stint on the song 'Everything is Awesome' because the fact is you’re awesome Will. If you want to check out the playlist before you see the movie you can check out the soundtrack on Spotify.
