Mia, an aspiring actress, serves lattes to movie stars in between auditions and Sebastian, a jazz musician, scrapes by playing cocktail party gigs in dingy bars, but as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.
Everyone knows that Ryan Gosling can get in front of the camera and produce award winning screen performances but very few if ever know that he can also step in front of the mic and belt out lulling tunes. Yes, this is exactly what the Hollywood star will be doing in the upcoming film 'La La Land'.
An old fashion musical
From the upcoming film's name, you can easily guess its genre. Can't you? Your guess is right if you thought of a musical or anything of the sort. The upcoming film starring Gosling alongside Emma Stone is an old-fashioned musical created by Damien Chazelle. The Harvard-schooled film director has produced another epic work barely two years after his much successful 'Whiplash'.

John Legend as a co-star
In addition to casting two of Hollywood A-listers, the youthful filmmaker has also raided the music industry and picked legendary singer John Legend to star in his new musical. Legend will be co-starring with lead actor Gosling. Even though John Legend is the real life pianist, it is Gosling who plays the piano in the upcoming movie.

An early award
Damien Chazelle's newest baby has already earned itself an award even before officially hitting the screens. The film recently scooped the audience award during the Toronto International Film Festival. Furthermore, it has been garnering positive reviews in print and audiovisual media as well as the web. Chazelle seems set to enjoy the same kind of success he had with Whiplash with this new film. 'Whiplash' left many craving for more of Chazelle's work.

The official trailer of the upcoming film left movie enthusiasts impatient to run their eyes through the entire film. The trailer, which was released back in July, opens with 35-year-old Gosling serenading 27-year-old Stone with the City of Stars original song. It ends with the Hollywood pair locked up in a passionate kiss. Even though the trailer is short and mostly wordless, it has sure succeeded in getting people psyched up for the upcoming film. The HD version of the trailer has already registered an over 2 million viewership on YouTube whereas another one uploaded by Lions Gate Entertainment has over a million views on the same platform.
The upcoming film is set to hit the theaters on December 9, 2016
An Oscar for the new film?
There is more reason why Chazelle's upcoming work has been making headlines across various media channels, it's tipped for an Oscar. La La received Best Picture nomination for the next Oscars immediately after premiering at the Venice Film Festival in August this year. The musical is contending for the top prize alongside Denzel Washington starring Fences, Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester by The Sea, and Barry Jenkin's Moonlight. According to various internet sites running an Oscar Watch, the upcoming musical is likely to topple its competitors and walk away with the prestigious awards when the Oscar lights are switched on.

Three big stages
Chazelle's new creation has enjoyed notable success so far. It has achieved a feat that few newly produced movies ever achieve, that of being screened prior to release at more than one major film festival. La La Land has been screened at three major film festivals namely Venice Film Festival, the USA's Telluride Film Festival, and Toronto International Film Festival.
As if all its previous screenings on major stages are not enough, the film is set to be screened again at the upcoming AFI FEST Gala.

'La La Land' plot
'La La Land' is about two lovers, one who is trying to carve a musical career for himself and another one who is trying to break into the Hollywood industry. These roles are played by 'The Notebook' actor Ryan Gosling and 'Easy A' actress, Emma Stone.
Mia (Emma Stone) is a budding actress who works in a movie theater serving coffee to film stars in between occasions. She at one point meets Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and the pair immediately fall in love. Sebastian is a struggling jazz musician, he relies on cocktail gigs and other small openings here and there to get to earn a living from music. The pair kick off their romantic relationship on a high note but the same relationship is after a while threatened by pressures which arise as the two scale the ladder in their careers. Will their love last or will it be torn apart by these career related pressures? Well, you'll get to know in December.
'There's something about musicals. They are movies as a dreamland, expressing the world in which you break into song, in which you can violate the rules of reality' said Chazelle, the film's writer and director
'La La Land' cast
The most notable faces in the upcoming musical will, of course, be Canada's screen sensation Ryan Gosling and his American colleague Emma Stone. The two will be coming together on set for the third time ever since they each debuted in Hollywood. Gosling and Stone have previously worked with each other in 2011's 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' and 2013's 'Gangster Squad' where Emma played Gosling's love interest. Fans will also not fail to recognize talented singer John Legend. The 'All of Me' singer is not far from his comfort zone as Chazelle has made him do that which he does every day, singing and more singing.
Joining Gosling, Stone, and Legend on the set of 'La La Land' will be other actors like Rosemary DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, and J.K Simmons among others.
The upcoming film is set in Los Angeles (LA). This explains its name. The film's name also infers to a place that is out of touch with reality, a dream sort of world.
Emma Stone plays Mia, a wide-eyed romantic who goes from audition to audition and she often failed in her quest to make it big

'All my characters are me. I'm not a good enough actor to become a character. I hear about actors who become the role and I think 'I wonder what that feels like'. Because for me, they're all me. I relate to these characters because aspects of their personality are like me. And I just turn up the parts of myself that are them and turn down the parts that aren't'
More on the film
With just a few weeks left to go before the new film comes to a theater near you, there's already a lot of news surrounding its lead cast. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are back in the news again with the most recent story being about claims that the actor has a restraining order against the sultry actress. This left many wondering if their years of friendship had finally come crumbling down. Emma has however since confirmed the story as just a joke she had tried to stir up.
Stone and Gosling have enjoyed years of friendship with each other and their closeness has even led some to speculate at some points that the two are romantically involved with each other. There were even allegations sometimes back that Gosling had something to say concerning Emma's break up from her ex-partner Andrew Garfield. Gosling is married to actress Eva Mendez with whom he has two children.

Away from Stone and Gosling's offscreen relationship, there are reports that the 'La La Land' film was initially set to have Emma Watson and Miles Teller as its lead cast. These two, however, failed to make it to the set of the upcoming film because of other commitments. Watson was, in particular, busy with 'Beauty and The Beast' which Disney is trying to adapt into a regular style movie. Watson and Teller's absence may have been a blessing in disguise as Stone and Gosling enjoy good chemistry together and hence could perfectly execute the love scenes which form the better part of the upcoming film.
